Naggar · Kullu District · Himachal Pradesh
Nestled in Naggar village at 1,760 metres, Curious Cat Cottage is a boutique guesthouse surrounded by apple orchards, pine forests, and the Beas river valley below.
Naggar is a small Himalayan village in the Kullu Valley, perched on the slopes above the Beas River in Himachal Pradesh. Once the ancient capital of the Kullu Kingdom, it is home to the 16th-century Naggar Castle — now a heritage hotel — and the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery, dedicated to the Russian painter who made Naggar his home for the last two decades of his life.
Unlike the busy bazaars of Manali or Kullu town, Naggar moves slowly. The lanes are narrow, the views stretch across the valley to the Dhauladhar range, and the air carries pine and woodsmoke. Apple orchards line the hillsides. It is the kind of place travellers plan to spend two days in and end up staying a week.
Naggar Castle — A 500-year-old fort built by Raja Sidh Singh, with sweeping views across the Kullu Valley. The walk up from the village takes about 20 minutes.
Nicholas Roerich Museum — The artist's estate and gallery, housing original paintings, personal artefacts and correspondence. A quiet, unhurried place worth at least two hours.
Gauri Shankar Temple — A wooden Himalayan temple near the castle, built in the pagoda style unique to the Kullu Valley.
Hampta Pass Trail — For trekkers, Naggar is a base for the Hampta Pass crossing into Spiti. Day walks toward Rumsu and Chikka are accessible without a guide.
Beas River — A 30-minute walk down from the village brings you to the river bank, good for an afternoon with a book.
From Manali — 26 km via NH3 and the left-bank road. About 45 minutes by car or taxi. Local buses run from Manali bus stand to Naggar roughly every two hours.
From Kullu — 22 km north along the Beas valley. Around 40 minutes. Buses and shared taxis available from Kullu town.
From Delhi — Overnight Volvo bus to Manali (approximately 14 hours), then taxi or bus to Naggar. Nearest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali Airport), 35 km south.
