A workation in Naggar

Curious Cat Cottage is a quiet workation stay in Naggar near Manali for travellers who want a proper desk, mountain views and a calmer base than Manali town. The Writer's Room and both Luxury Rooms have desks; there is a 100 Mbps connection, power backup, a common lounge, a reading library and a specialty coffee bar. It is a five-room guesthouse, not a coworking space.

The setting

Naggar is a village on a ridge above the Beas river, 26 km south of Manali and 22 km north of Kullu, at 1,760 metres. The main road to Manali and Rohtang bypasses it, so the lanes carry little through-traffic. That is the whole proposition for a workation: you get the Kullu valley without the horns, the tout traffic and the seasonal crush of Mall Road, and you are still 45 minutes from Manali when you want it.

Curious Cat Cottage sits off the through-road, surrounded by apple orchard and deodar forest. It opened in January 2026 and has five private rooms and shared dorm beds. It is a small guesthouse, not a hotel and not a coworking space — there are no hot desks, no meeting rooms, no booths and no day passes.

Where you would actually work

Being specific matters more than enthusiasm here, so here is exactly what exists.

Writer's Room — built around its desk. A writing desk and rattan chair by large forest-facing windows, with a private bathroom and an orchard view. It is the room designed around working alone, and the quietest of the five. It takes up to 3 guests.
Luxury Rooms (x2) — desk, plus the best views. King bed, a desk, a private balcony over the valley, en-suite bathroom and a reading corner with warm lighting. The most space of any room, and the balcony is a genuinely good place to work from on a clear day.
Cosy Rooms (x2) — double bed, mountain-facing window over the orchard, shared balcony. Comfortable, good value, no desk.
Dorm beds — shared sleeping space with access to all common areas. Fine for evenings and sleeping; not somewhere to take calls or concentrate during the day.

Beyond the rooms there is a common lounge and a curated reading library, both open through the day, and a specialty coffee bar serving single-origin coffee made properly rather than instant. Every room has hot water 24/7 and an en-suite or private bathroom.

Internet

The cottage runs a 100 Mbps connection, with WiFi throughout the property. That is the line speed; like any shared connection, what you get at any moment depends on how many people are online. In practice it is enough for video calls, large uploads and everything most remote work involves, and guests work from here routinely on longer stays.

There is power backup on site, so a cut in the village does not end your working day. Power interruptions do happen in the Kullu valley, particularly in winter.

Mobile coverage at the property is good, which gives you a second route online if you need one. Coverage in mountain valleys varies by operator, so if you intend to rely on your own network as a primary connection, tell us which one you use and we will tell you what to expect: WhatsApp +91 99823 68018.

Noise and privacy

Realistic expectations, since this is a small house rather than a hotel:

Best for

Not ideal for

Arriving, and staying a while

From Manali — 26 km, about 45 minutes by taxi. Local buses run from Manali bus stand every couple of hours.

From Kullu — 22 km, roughly 40 minutes, with buses and shared taxis from Kullu town.

By air — Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali, KUU) is nearest at 28 km. Chandigarh has far more connections, then road.

By bus from Delhi — overnight Volvo towards Manali, alight at Patlikuhal, then a short taxi up to Naggar. Routes are covered in more detail on the staying near Manali page.

Check-in is between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM and check-out is by 12:00 noon. If you are arriving on an overnight bus and will be early, tell us in advance.

Longer stays — the village has a growing community of independent cafés, artists and long-stay travellers, and guests working on something usually stay a week or more. Long-stay rates are by enquiry rather than a published discount, so message us with your dates and we will quote you.

Season — open year-round. March to June and September to November are the most comfortable. Winter is cold with occasional snow and room heating, and it is the quietest working time of the year.

Frequently asked questions

Is Curious Cat Cottage a coworking space?

No. It is a five-room guesthouse with a shared lounge and a reading library. There are no hot desks, meeting rooms, booths, printing or day passes, and no coworking membership.

If you want a desk to work from during your stay, book the Writer's Room.

Which room has a proper desk?

Three of the five private rooms have a desk: the Writer's Room, which is built around a dedicated writing desk by large forest-facing windows, and both Luxury Rooms.

The Writer's Room is the quietest and most single-minded of the three. The Luxury Rooms pair a desk with the most space and a private balcony over the valley. The Cosy Rooms have no desk.

How fast is the WiFi?

The property runs a 100 Mbps connection with WiFi throughout. That is the line speed, and it is shared, so actual throughput varies with how many guests are online at once.

It handles video calls and large uploads comfortably. If your work needs a guaranteed sustained figure, message +91 99823 68018 and tell us what you need.

Is there power backup?

Yes. The cottage has power backup, so a cut in the village does not end your working day. Outages do happen in the Kullu valley, particularly in winter.

Which mobile networks work in Naggar?

Mobile coverage at the property is good. Coverage in mountain valleys does vary by operator, so if you plan to rely on mobile data as your main connection rather than a backup, tell us which network you use before you travel.

Can I take video calls?

From a private room, yes. Each has its own door and bathroom, the property is off the main road so daytime noise is low, and the 100 Mbps connection handles video comfortably. A dorm bed is not suitable for calls.

Is there somewhere to work other than my room?

Yes. The common lounge and the curated reading library are open through the day, and the specialty coffee bar serves single-origin coffee from the morning onwards.

These are shared spaces, so they are better for focused solo work than for calls.

Do you offer weekly or monthly rates for long stays?

Long-stay rates are handled by enquiry rather than published as a fixed discount. Guests working on something typically stay a week or more, so message us with your dates and we will quote you.

How far is Manali, and do I need a vehicle?

Manali is 26 km, about 45 minutes by taxi, and local buses run from Manali bus stand every couple of hours. Kullu is 22 km.

You do not need your own vehicle to stay here — the village is walkable and we can help arrange taxis and day trips.
